2nd Level Game Jam Recap

2nd Level Game Jam

Numerous hobby programmers and students create computer games worthy of enthusiasm - in their free time or during their studies. Although the computer games industry generates enormous sales, a lot of economic potential remains untapped here, since most of these developments never make it to the market.

Especially since the emergence of corresponding courses of study at the Würzburg higher education institutions, the number of releases and company foundations in the field of computer games in Main-Franconia has been rising sharply. In order to actively support this trend, employees of the University of Würzburg and the RTF community, in cooperation with the Center for Digital Innovation Mainfranken (ZDI) and the FFF Bayern, organized a “Game Jam” last weekend (September 02 to 04) in the idea lab of the ZDI.

Game Jams bring together creators, artists and programmers to jointly develop and test innovative concepts for computer games. At the 2nd Level Game Jam, Prof. Sebastian von Mammen, Samuel Truman and Simon Keller motivated and guided the 12 participants to systematically prepare existing but not yet finished computer games for commercialization. In particular, the participants focused on a professional design of their game worlds and a systematic, rapid development of new content.

Three projects were catapulted to a new level during the Game Jam: The pirate game “Project Guybrush”, the 3D jump and run game “Boss’n’Run” and the adventure game with card elements “The Cardest Dungeon”.

Next year, the organizers and participants plan to return to strengthen the next generation of projects. Maybe in the meantime one or the other team will manage to set up professionally, bring their game to the market, or take the next steps in this direction thanks to the excellent support from the local innovation centers and the state of Bavaria.
