SustainTourism – Experiencing Tourism From Home

Travel contributes to climate change. To reduce this contribution, we designed a new method of tourism experiences (from home) based on users’ tourism needs. We developed SustainTourism based on a cultural probe study with 28 international students. This is an app-based platform that takes into account tourists’ needs, such as interaction with locals, involvement of all senses, and the tourism process (from preparation to recollection). An exemplary application with the destination Würzburg shows users digital and physical content on a daily basis. When booking, virtual tourists receive a package of local surprises that unlock associated digital content. In this way, travel can take place from home and contribute less to climate change.
